The Making of The Merchant in Venice

Five hundred years ago, the Jewish ghetto was created in Venice, Italy. The gated, sequestered area became an active thriving mercantile and artistic community. Four hundred years ago, William Shakespeare wrote the play “The Merchant of Venice” without ever having visited the city. In summer 2016 Shaul Bassi invited Compagnia de Colombari under the direction of Karin Coonrod to produce the play for the first time in Venetian ghetto. This film is the story of the creativity, the conflicts and the challenges of a production that was a first of its kind.
